Madras New Woodlands is in the upper middle tier of South Indian Vegetarian restaurants. It’s an understated gem where a regular South Indian thali (Saapadu in Tamil) hits the ballpark of $10 - its clientele is quite well-heeled which speaks of its reputation. In Singapore it is very easy to get poor quality Indian Vegetarian food at triple the price for what this place charges. Granted the decor can be quite dated and the payment is somewhat limited (if you’re a tourist, please please bring cash - this is by and large common for most Little India establishments outside Mustafa) - but the price you are paying for is well worth it for the quality of food you are getting.Service can be quite gruff but it’s important to note that that for the price you are paying and the turnover of customers this is very much a Singapore problem.
We never got to eat anything. We were scolded for sitting at a table apparently reserved for 'the boss'. Well done, we go elsewhere. Why should you leave a table empty and insult customers that way? It's my first time here. Ok. It's my last. I hear the food is good. Pity about the service..
Been going here for over 2 decades and the standard has dropped relatively low. We ordered appam set which took forever to be served. The appam used to be crispy on the side and the center spongy and thick. The one we had yesterday was undercooked and the sides were very chewy. We also had very mixed service, the person who served us was amazing but the other staff were just not so attentive when we first walked it to check if there were seats available. They just told us to move into the other side of the restaurant without checking if there were enough seats for everyone.
Excellent Appam set served before 10AM masala tea pretty decent though a bit more than the average compared to similar local restaurants. Nice people.Follow up - Appams also served up until 9:30pm in the evening though not sure when start point is. Upma and vada are both tasty too and staff are nice. Generally one of the calmer and more relaxing of the Indian restaurants that we've been to in Little India. Well priced.
Best vadai ever! Surprisingly soft and fluffy, the best I have tried! All three dipping sauces were excellent too!Puri with chick pea curry, my favourite combination.Great vegetarian restaurant!
Time to enjoy a nice breakfast with an appam set and a madras tea (small).Appam was soft on the centre and slightly crispy on the exterior. Served warm. It goes really well with the orange sugar and coconut milk. Madras tea was thick & creamy, and you can add sugar as you need.🫓☕The place was packed in the morning, but no queue at my time (8.30am, Sunday). Staff seemed busy & stressed (this has been the energies of many people these days as we are undergoing purging collectively). Boss is kind and friendly, quietly came by to top up my orange sugar when I used it up the first round. 🙏🏻
I love the vadai, it's the tastiest I've ever had and I'm surprised how nice and crisp it is outside, and soft and warm inside. Makes me feel like I've been eating nonsense for a long time. The VIP Thali is also absolutely delicious! Likewise the dosai. Service was o-k, the waiter actually got two out of 5 orders wrong, but was quick to serve us the correct item after that.Didn't get to try the appam where they make it freshly on the spot. Can't wait to come back here again.
We went for Breakfast on 18th Sept... no rush at all in the restaurant... very pleasant quick service... very friendly... foid taste wise average and can do better I feel specific to break fast... but the people working are there friendly... unfortunately, they are not accepting visa or master card.. maje sure carry a local card or carry cash.. but they accepted inr and so generous. ... we ordered plain idly, sambhar idly, dosa and coffee... dosa is average and can be better... as it is ganesha vinayagar chaturthi and took some idol photos from near shop.
